Jiangxi Service Learning Trip
Description
Since 2013, HKUST students have visited Jiangxi every year to serve the 'left-behind children' (留守兒童) there. Volunteers teach and organize interactive activities for the children, as well as learn about their living community and culture through family visits. They also visit the social enterprise supporting the children to better understand how the local organic farm operates and how it impacts the Jiangxi community. Volunteers continue to build upon the efforts of past participants and develop the relationship with the children and the local community.
Participants of the trip will be able to:
- Empower 'left-behind children' through interactive themed workshops designed and led by participants
- Understand the needs and difficulties faced by 'left-behind children' and their families through pre-trip workshops, interaction in village schools and home visits
- Explore how the social enterprise positively impacts the local community through farm work by observing the farm's operation and interacting with the founder
