Taking on the Leadership Challenge

The Student Leadership Challenge was developed by James Kouzes and Barry Posner as an evidence-based approach to develop young talent. Based on five major principles and ten commitments of leadership, it provides actionable advice on how to become exemplary leaders that have an impact on their environment. The five principles are to:

  1. Model the way: act consistently to earn the respect of others
  2. Inspire a shared vision: making others motivated in a sense of purpose
  3. Challenge the process: courage to change the status quo
  4. Enable others to act: building trust and collaboration
  5. Encourage the heart: acting with sincerity
Symbols of 5 practices of leadership: model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act and encourage the heart.

The Student Leadership Challenge Model is based on real life experiences of students who have engaged in leadership roles. Tangible examples are provided on how students can react to certain situations to build their peers through behaving like a trustworthy leader. We think that this model is useful for directing our efforts to student training so they can experience coherent training outcomes regardless of which service program they attend.

Passionate student leaders with track record in community engagement and service across schools and Public Service Leaders are invited to attend Student Leadership Challenge training. Through dialogue with other fellow student leaders and action-oriented facilitation, participants obtain a clearer picture of their leadership behaviors and a plan to take their personal leadership to the next level.
