Servant Leadership Operation Training 2.0 (SLOT 2.0)
SLOT 2.0 (Servant Leadership Operation Training 2.0) is a unique servant leadership program focusing on service learning offered by U-fire Networks Ltd in partnership with Hong Kong YMCA. It aims to provide a platform for college students in Hong Kong to learn how to become servant leaders by providing community services to people in need in Hong Kong. By combining classroom training, experiential learning activities, and serving in society, SLOT provides a community-based learning environment for mentors who join the program to not only learn leadership but also apply leadership skills by serving others as servant leaders that make an impact on society.
Participating students served as mentors along with students from other tertiary institutions which leverage the latest Internet technologies acting as e-Big brothers/sisters to the children in need in the poorest parts of Hong Kong. Regular gathering and mentoring time were mutually agreed upon the mentor and mentee to foster the mentorship relationship, and they all grow with each other. Aside from regular face-to-face meetings, they also encourage the mentees to meet them online and chat with them about the daily happenings around them using computers and the Internet.
Over the course of the mentorship, U-fire Network has also provided training to better equip the mentors for their future development. Successful CxO level leaders from different organizations were invited to inspire them to be servant leaders for tomorrow. They shared their life stories with the mentors genuinely. Marketplace Volunteers, including those from leading corporations such as IBM, also came to advise each and every team to implement interesting social projects that will make a sustainable impact on society.
On 20 April, students fanned out in groups with their mentees to various spots around the SSP area to serve the elders, children, and ethnic minorities there. This was one of the modules in which students could plan their own projects and make them happen during HKUST Service Learning Day as a territory-wide movement. The objective of the projects is to address social problems in Sham Shui Po (SSP) area by generating innovative ideas and feasible solutions.
