Workcamp @ Tai O Community (December 2012) 大澳工作營
Workcamp @ Tai O Community (大澳工作營) is the first local service learning trip organized by HKUST Connect. The team not only explored the unique culture of Tai O, once the biggest fishing community in Hong Kong, but also made a difference in the community through providing various services.
Before departure, student volunteers attended pre-trip workshops to learn about activity planning and to share their research on the history and culture of Tai O. Dulux Paints HK generously sponsored the paint and tools for the refurbishment service andalso tailor made a training session for our volunteers to teach them about basic painting techniques and characteristics of different kinds of paint.
During the workcamp, our students repainted 8 worn-out stilt houses for local elders. They also assisted the HKYWCA Tai O Community Work Office in conducting a mini-study on community needs in Tai O by designing questionnaires and interviewing local residents and in organizing interactive activities for the people in Tai O. In addition to the service activities, all volunteers enjoyed a wonderful time staying in tradition stilt houses and cooking breakfast and dinner together.
After the 4-day program, our volunteers developed friendships with the Tai O people and had a taste of the relaxing and traditional fishing village lifestyle there. On 29 January 2013, our team returned to Tai O to continue their good work by painting 4 more stilt houses. The elders were happy with their newly repainted houses. It was great to see the impacts we made on the local community!
