President-to-President Dialogue - HKUST x ICRC

There will be a discussion between the Presidents of HKUST and ICRC on the power of new technologies and role of Asian youth

Prof Wei Shyy, President of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)
Mr Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

Technology bridges gaps and connects us — drones delivering medical supplies and digital cash transfers using mobile money are both tangible examples of how new technology have changed our lives for the better. While the younger generation is reaping the benefits of modern technology, have they imagined what life would look like to live in war-torn areas and conflict zones where technologies could be turned into weapons that kill innocent people? How can we ensure that technology is used for good and creates a better future for humanitarian aid?

Join the President-to-President Dialogue to find out how advanced technology can enhance humanitarian work to benefit victims of armed conflicts around the world, and what Asian youths can do to contribute to humanitarian relief efforts while living far away from devastated war zones.

We are honored to have Professor Wei Shyy, President of HKUST and Mr. Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to discuss and exchange ideas on how technological innovation creates new possibilities and challenges for global humanitarian work. The emergence of autonomous weapon is particularly controversial. How can we better protect civilians in future wars?

Asia is evidently playing bigger roles in the international arena. As a young international relations scholar originated from Hong Kong, guest speaker Dr Simon Shen, Founding Chairman of Glocal Learning Offices (GLOs); Lead writer (Global) at the Hong Kong Economic Journal will join the discussion on the impact that Asian youths could have on humanitarian work in Asia and beyond.

The dialogue will be moderated by Professor Kellee Tsai, Dean of Humanities and Social Science and Associate Director of Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research, HKUST.
