English Fun Tour with New Immigrants Children 英語遊蹤

In this service, volunteers taught new immigrants English through completing various tasks in English at local sightseeing spots, and learnt about their needs and concerns of living in Hong Kong.

I found this experience of doing volunteer service with the new immigrant children really interesting. Although I had a really hard time to get their attention to accomplish the tasks required, watching them taking the initiative to speak English to the tourists left me a very satisfying feeling! It was such a great experience! :)

After the community service day with the new immigrants, I found out that they are actually very nice and similar to indigenous Hong Kongers, and are also energetic and eager to learn. I think people sometimes labelled immigrants as perhaps lack in English proficiency and not being able to adapt to the local culture. But this generalization is both unfair and naïve in a way that ignored how immigrants are comprised with individuals with distinct characteristics. Without really a face-to-face interaction, we cannot understand what they truly are.
