This autumn, HKUST Connect volunteers visited Yi O Village on Lantau Island, home to Hong Kong’s largest and rarest organic rice paddy with a history spanning over 200 years. Amid golden fields, participants took part in the traditional harvest, cutting rice stalks by hand and reconnecting with the land.
The harvest highlighted the dedication behind sustainable farming and the need to protect biodiversity. Volunteers experienced firsthand the effort required to bring rice from field to table, gaining respect for farmers and eco-friendly practices. Many left with a renewed appreciation for food and a commitment to reducing waste.
