Volunteers serving kindergarten students at Suwandi Foundation

In January 2026, a team of 16 HKUST students embarked on a meaningful service-learning trip to Bali in collaboration with Volunteers in Asia (VIA). This immersive journey provided participants with valuable opportunities to teach students of various age groups and engage with individuals with physical disabilities, driving both social impact and personal growth.

Prior to departure, the volunteers participated in a series of preparatory workshops to strengthen their teaching skills, gain insights into Balinese culture, and learn how to effectively apply their knowledge in real-world settings. They also developed tailored lesson plans to meet the diverse needs of the communities they were set to serve.

During the first phase of the trip, volunteers served at the Suwandi Foundation, delivering interactive workshops on English, STEM, creative projects, and world cultures. Despite challenging weather conditions, the local students remained highly motivated and eager to learn, inspiring the team with their dedication and enthusiasm.

The team then transitioned to Cahaya Mutiara Ubud, where they worked closely with residents with physical disabilities. Through shared daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, and farming, volunteers gained profound insights into the residents’ daily lives and resilience. They also co-created short videos to promote social inclusion and share moving stories of strength and perseverance.

Beyond their direct service work, the participants engaged in cultural visits and local experiences to deepen their understanding of Bali’s traditions and community context. Combined with daily reflections, the journey encouraged them to think critically about social inclusion, global citizenship, and their role in creating meaningful, lasting change.

Student Sharing

“I now recognize self-debriefing as an essential habit. By regularly journaling or reflecting at the end of each day, I can better digest what I have seen, felt, and learned, leading to greater self-awareness and intentional living."

Mandy Lee
SBM, Year 3

“In the future, I hope to bring this human-centered approach into my work, whether in biotechnology, social projects, or public service - by emphasizing empathy, education, and cross-cultural understanding."
