Question + Description

Why donate blood?

Science has solved a lot of problems, but it still can’t manufacture blood. There is simply no substitute. That means patients fighting cancer, undergoing surgery, or recovering from accidents rely entirely on real people like you. The best part? Because your blood is processed into different components, a single donation doesn't just help one person—it can save up to three lives. It is a small act with a massive multiplier effect.

I’m under 18 – can I still donate?

Donors aged 16 to 17 need to have parental consent at the first donation and can give blood three times in a year, with an interval of no less than 150 days between two consecutive whole blood donations. Download the Parent/Guardian Consent To Blood Donation.

Who can Donate?

You can donate if you:
•    Have good health
•    Weigh 41 kg or above (90 lbs or above)
•    Are aged between 16 and 65
The Red Cross will conduct a health screening before each donation to ensure it's safe for you. Still unsure? Complete this online eligibility test.

How long does the entire process take?

Plan for about 45 minutes to an hour for your first visit. The actual blood collection takes 7-12 minutes. The rest of the time covers registration, health screening, and a rest period afterward with refreshments.

What happens during a blood donation?

Please refer to the information on Blood Transfusion Services website: https://www5.ha.org.hk/rcbts/donation-procedure?lang=en

How much blood will be taken?

A standard donation is 350ml or 450ml—about 8-10% of your total blood volume. Your body replaces the fluid within 24 hours and the red blood cells within 4-8 weeks.

Can I donate if I am on medication or birth control?

Birth control pills don't disqualify you. For other medications, it depends on what you're taking and why. Common medications like vitamins or allergy medicine are usually fine. Antibiotics require a waiting period after you finish the course. Be honest during your health screening.

What happens to my blood after I donate?

Your blood is tested, processed, and separated into components (red cells, platelets, plasma). These components go to hospitals across Hong Kong where they're used for surgeries, cancer treatments, trauma care, and other medical needs. One donation can help three patients and more.

What should I eat or drink before donating?

Eat a proper meal within 4 hours before donating—don't come on an empty stomach. Drink plenty of water (at least 2-3 glasses) in the hours leading up to your appointment. Avoid fatty foods right before donating. Get adequate sleep the night before.
