In numerous regions across the globe, digital maps fail to accurately represent buildings and facilities, bringing significant challenges to frontline responders in timely disaster management.

In an effort to tackle this problem, a group of 27 volunteers supported the Missing Maps initiative by updating the map together. They focused on mapping the area of the Durban city, situated in South Africa with a population of 600,000. Notably, Durban experienced severe flooding and landslides in 2022, resulting in the destruction or damage of numerous houses, and the displacement of thousands of individuals. Our committed volunteers successfully mapped a total of around 4,000 buildings within the area.

By incorporating these vital updates, the updated map became accessible to organizers worldwide, allowing them to respond effectively to crises occurring in these areas. This collaborative effort played a crucial role in bridging the information gap and in facilitating prompt action during future disasters.
