My neighbours: Ethnic Minorities



[This is a workshop in Changemaker Gear Up Training Series (GUTS)*]
The 2016 Population By-census reported that about 580,000 non-Chinese are residing in Hong Kong. Young people from ethnic minority backgrounds experience challenges in their everyday lives due to systemic problems in society at large.
Growing up as an ethnic minority in Hong Kong, Dr. Rizwan Ullah will share insights on education and inequality.

Dr. Rizwan Ullah has over 17 years of experience in teaching and addressing the education needs of Non-Chinese speaking students (NCSS) in Hong Kong. He works as a Vice Principal in a local secondary school overseeing the pastoral aspect of the school. His expertise lies in the discourse of Chinese language education of NCSS and on the implementation of Multicultural Education in a school context. Currently, he is a co-investigator in various research projects that investigate the issue of multilingualism, multiculturalism and articulation pathways of NCSS. Dr. Ullah completed his PhD from The University of Hong Kong.
Dr. Ullah currently sits on various high-level government advisory boards such as the Equal Opportunities Commission and Youth Development Commission of Hong Kong. He was awarded the Chief Executive Commendation for Community Services in 2015 and the Certificate of Commendation from the Secretary for Home Affairs for Distinguished Services for Community Building in 2013.

- Faculty and staff who would like to join the event can email us at connect@ust.hk.
- To avoid interruption and hindering the progress of session, instructors may not admit new participants who are late for more than 15 minutes.
- Participants who are away from the session for 15 minutes or more may not be able to attain the HLTH1010 course hours.
* Complete 3 GUTS workshops to get a certificate of participation.
HLTH1010 Course Hours:
Upon complete attendance of the workshop, participants may attain a maximum of 1 hours in "Wellness & Personal Enrichment Events" in the "Activities" module.
