Guilin Field Trip (Jun 2025)

In June 2025, Professor Cindy Lam and a group of 13 students embarked on their second field trip to Integral in Guilin. The primary goal of this expedition was not only to assess the new equipment but also to evaluate how seasonal variations impact the original research methodologies.
To ensure a smooth and productive trip, Professor Lam, alongside HKUST Connect and three students who had participated in the previous field trip, took on leadership roles by conducting an orientation and training session for the incoming participants. Leveraging the experience of the returning students, the new student leaders provided hands-on training, preparing everyone for the upcoming journey.
Throughout the field trip, the team operated in various groups to gather data, expanding their focus beyond previous elements to include the study of insects. The fluctuating water levels prompted students to consider how to maintain accuracy and control variables, ensuring that the collected data could be effectively compared to the data from the previous trip. This challenge encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving among the students, fostering a deeper understanding of the research process.
Engaging in this hands-on fieldwork experience allowed students to develop essential teamwork skills and appreciate the value of collaborative investigation. By applying scientific principles to their research practices, students honed their ability to adapt and conduct investigations effectively. These experiences not only equipped students with diverse skills but also enhanced their soft skills, preparing them for future academic and professional endeavors.
