HKUST Sensory Restaurant on Wheels 科大流動五感大茶樓

As part of a meaningful community engagement initiative, students participated in the award-winning “Sensory Restaurant on Wheels” program — a unique dining experience designed to recreate the nostalgic ambiance of a traditional Chinese dim sum restaurant. This immersive program specifically caters to elderly individuals living with dementia or swallowing difficulties, aiming to improve their appetite, stimulate their five senses, and provide a joyful, interactive social experience reminiscent of familiar cultural traditions.
During the event, students played a vital role in supporting both the logistical setup and execution of the program. In addition to their behind-the-scenes support, students also took on active roles in interacting with the elderly guests. They offered companionship, guided conversations that triggered positive memories, and provided gentle encouragement to help participants fully engage with the sensory experience. Students further enriched the day by leading vibrant campus tours, offering the elderly a chance to explore and enjoy the university environment in a safe, welcoming, and stimulating way.
This hands-on involvement not only contributed to the well-being and happiness of the elderly participants but also provided students with valuable experience in empathy, communication, and intergenerational connection — deepening their understanding of inclusive care and the impact of sensory engagement on cognitive health.
