In many parts of the world, outdated or incomplete digital maps hinder disaster response, leaving vulnerable communities at risk. To address this, HKUST volunteers joined the Missing Maps initiative following the early 2025 earthquake in Myanmar, helping chart unmapped areas across Myanmar and Thailand. Together, the team mapped approximately 3,800 buildings, instantly sharing this data with global humanitarian organizations. These contributions provided frontline responders with crucial information to accelerate aid delivery, evacuation planning, and resource allocation. Beyond offering students hands-on experience with humanitarian technology, the event highlighted how open-source collaboration can help build a safer, more resilient world.
