Guilin Field Trip (Jan 2025)

In January 2025, Professor Cindy Lam led a group of nine HKUST students on a 4-day field trip in Guilin. This marked the first investigation following the preliminary exploration in Integral. The primary objective of this journey was to gather diverse data from multiple locations within Integral and assess the efficacy of our investigative methodologies.
Prior to reaching Guilin, Professor Lam, HKUST Connect, and three senior students conducted an orientation and training session for the other six participants. This preparatory phase enriched the team's understanding of Integral's context and the varied data collection techniques. Armed with this knowledge and having tested these methods at HKUST, the team was well-prepared for the upcoming challenges.
Throughout the field trip, the group was strategically divided into sub-teams tasked with collecting data on a range of parameters, including bird and fish species, microorganisms, water quality, and sediment composition. This hands-on approach not only familiarized students with practical techniques but also highlighted the complexities of real-world applications, along with solutions to overcome them.
Engaging in these immersive experiences not only deepened students' theoretical knowledge but also underscored the intricate connections between classroom learning and fieldwork. Such experiential learning opportunities empowered students to develop critical skills and insights essential for their academic and professional growth.
