Martin Tan, the CEO of a Singaporean philanthropic organisation, The Majurity Trust, gave a talk on how to search for one’s fit and introduce ways to solve social problems more effectively.

Martin gave his opinion that it is important to know oneself better to find one’s fit. He introduced the circles of social identity, suggesting one’s social identity is defined by three parts: core values, given identities that might be hard to be changed, and destiny that could be chosen freely by oneself. The hedgehog concept by Jim Collins was also introduced, providing a more concrete way to search for one’s fit by the following factors: one’s strengths, passion, and economic engine.

“What we need to start moving into is an era of collaboration,” said Martin. He stated that the concept of compromising one’s benefit for the common good is essential in building a better society. It is further suggested that the best way to solve social problems effectively is to get into the community and have need-based conversations with the needy. He believed changemakers must know how to navigate resources properly in order to make positive changes to the community.
