Volunteers collecting vegetables

Food waste contributes 36% of the total municipal solid waste in Hong Kong. The disposal of 3,300 tonnes of biodegradable food waste is taking up the limited landfill area and is not a sustainable way to handle the issue. Therefore, a local green group Ever Green Association organized "Food Share We Care" to collect the unsold fresh vegetables in the food market and re-distribute them to the needy in order to combat food waste.

The needy will receive those unsold fresh vegetables.

The entire process from collecting the unsold food at the market to delivering the food was amazing. You could see that both the giver and receiver were happy. I was surprised by the amount of food we received. Seeing the elderly face light up was so amazing.

Taking part in this volunteer work made me realize that so much food could be going straight to the landfill. I felt like I did a good job collecting them and giving it cut to the elderly. It was also very fulfilling to see the smile on the elderly’s faces when we passed them the food.
