A team of Connect ACE (Ambassador for Community Engagement) 2017/18 cooperated with "The Hong Kong Society for the Blind Family Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired" to organize this 3-session service project which aimed to facilitate social integration and help Visually Impaired People (VIP) develop interests and a sense of accomplishment.

In the first session held on 7 Apr 2018, HKUST Volunteers organized a soap handicraft workshop for the VIPs. The VIPs found the activity interesting as this was the first time they had made their own soap, from melting and pouring the soap base, to adding coloured dye and fragrance oils according to their preference. Both HKUST volunteers and VIPs enjoyed their time together and they looked forward to the next activity.

Student Sharing

Perhaps all of us have underestimated the ability of the visually-impaired. They can do a lot more than what we assumed! Although they are living in a world of darkness / blurriness, the difficulties they faced do not deter them from exploring the unknowns. They are also willing to learn and try out things that they are not familiar with. Their spirits impressed me a lot in this service.

SSCI, Year 2
