There is an estimated 1 tonne of imperfect vegetables from Western Wholesale Food Market being thrown to the limited landfill daily. To help fight against food waste from source, the local green group Ever Green Association has further expanded their “Food Share We Care” (「愛‧共饗」) campaign which started in 2013 to the Western Wholesale Food Market in 2016. The campaign aims at collecting unsold fresh vegetables in the food market and re-distributing them to needy groups. Volunteers have given a helping hand in saving those “ugly foods” from the landfill!

Volunteers checking if the pineapples are good to donate to people in need

Description

人對食物的外觀要求越來越高,即使只是丁點兒的破損,也被淪為food waste。 幸好有綠長青、 Food Angel 這些機構, 把食物回收再送給有需要的人,幫助他人之餘還能為環保出一分力!

I have learnt a lot about the nature and operations of the wholesale market in HK today, understanding how the industry is declining and the change in their business model. On the other hand, it's such a pleasure to see so many owners here are willing to share the unfavorable food with people who need it. It's meaningful to participate in this campaign. Serving the people with food that could have been wasted! It's great that some NGOs now initiates schemes like this to avoid food waste, yet it's time for society to reflect how we can be a part of it and maybe government should also provide more support for a better HK or even a better planet. Enjoyed the day!
