Together We Fly High - Lantau Island Service Camp (Jan 2017) 童伴成長 - 南大嶼山服務營
HKUST Connect organized our first Lantau Island Service Camp in 2017. This service camp aimed at supporting and empowering the children from Tung Wan Mok Law Shui Wah School through a series of interactive activities. The service experience enabled our volunteers to understand the needs and difficulties that these children are facing. A total of 9 volunteers put their hearts into planning a variety of service activities, and honed their skills in activity design and management in the four pre-trip workshops and preparation meetings held between October and December 2016.
Tung Wan Mok Law Shui Wah School is one of the schools for social development in Hong Kong. It provides education to children with moderate to severe behavioral and emotional problems or from troubled families. Public attention was drawn towards these children in need after the announcement of relocating the School to Tuen Mun. Therefore, showing care and support to them also became one of our objectives.
Over the course of four days, our volunteers organized team-building activities, wall painting, magic workshops and science workshops. Through participating in these activities and workshops, the children not only acquired new skills, but also developed their team spirit. In collaboration with the School, volunteers and the children also organized a Chinese New Year Fair in Cheung Chau to serve the local elderly. The fair provided booth games related to Chinese New Year customs, red couplet writing workshop and goldfish paper folding workshop, which spread the festive atmosphere in Cheung Chau.
Throughout the 4-day service camp, volunteers had the opportunity to understand the situation of these children and experience their school life. They all had a memorable time with the children and hope to join the Camp again in the future.
