Volunteers introducing the HKUST campus to the elderly

Organized by a HKUST Connect Ambassador for Community Engagement (ACE), volunteers led a group of elders from the Cho Yiu Estate in Lai King on a guided tour of HKUST and Sai Kung. During the tour, the elders learned about university life through sharing from the students and lunch at the University canteen. The day finished off with a tour of the Sai Kung promenade. All the volunteers and elders enjoyed their day together.

Student Sharing

We organized a tour visiting HKUST and Sai Kung for elderly living alone, and around 50 elderly participated. Before the day of the event, I was honestly worried about the arrangements since it involved outdoor sightseeing. The weather was unstable and it would obviously be a shame if the elderly could not enjoy the day as planned. However, despite the fact that we had to delay the trip due to sudden rain in the middle of the day, the elderly were enthusiastic throughout whole trip. Some of them may not find the places new or exciting but I realized that the elderly, on the whole, treasured the outing as an opportunity to simply walk around. It is because they normally they tend to stay at home and do not get the chance to visit other places in Hong Kong. It was therefore nice to see them enjoying the trip and I was also relieved and pleased to see that our whole plan ran out smoothly. Overall, it has been a rewarding experience that left a lot of fond memories. If an opportunity comes by again, it would be nice to organize these kinds of activities for the elderly in the future.

今天才發覺原來老人家都可以很幽默,他們經常說笑,形象與我心中所想的大有出入。所以,今天的服務能如此順利,全靠他們開朗的性格,令過程輕鬆,還令我學會與老人家相處。
