SOSC1810 Sociology of the Family is a course offered by Division of Social Science, HKUST, integrating Service Learning with knowledge of social science studies. This service-learning project aimed at helping students understand how various factors shape the everyday lives of newly-arrived immigrant women in Hong Kong, and the challenges they face, as well as raising awareness of the situations of these women in the HKUST community. At the beginning of the project, students learned about Service Learning and some useful communication skills when interacting with these women. They visited these women and their families at least two times in order to get to know more about their lives and needs. After the visits, students not only wrote reports to integrate what they learned in class and their real service experiences, but they also prepared exhibition boards to share these women's situations and difficulties on campus.
