Huangshan Service Learning Trip (June 2012)
Further to last year’s success, 4 returning participants initiated this trip to continue their effort in serving the primary school children in Huangshan, Anhui Province, China. Supported by the HKUST Connect and sponsored by a private donation, 16 students together with 2 staff provided basic science teaching, interactive themed workshops and established reading corners in classrooms for Primary 2 to 5 students at the Huangshanqu Sankou Zhongxin Xuexiao (黃山區三口中心學校小學部) and a village school Wangjiaqiao Xiaoxue (汪家橋小學). Volunteers also visited local families to develop a deeper understanding of the lives of underprivileged population in rural China.
Before departure, student volunteers attended pre-trip workshops to test out the teaching rundown and materials they prepared, and also to learn about the etiquette of conducting family visits. After the 7-day trip, our volunteers and the local students developed friendship and they all had a great time in Huangshan.
