Huangshan Service Learning Program (June 2011)
The Huangshan Service Learning Trip held on 1-7 June 2011 was the first of our 3-year commitment to build a long-term relationship with the rural communities in Anhui. Initiated by a group of 4 students and sponsored by a private donation, 16 students together with 2 staff participated in this 7-day trip to Anhui Province, China, to teach basic science, English and handicraft, etc., to Primary 5 to 6 students at the Huangshanqu Sankou Zhongxin School (黃山區三口中心學校小學部). Before departure, student volunteers attended pre-trip workshops to test out the teaching rundown and materials they prepared, and also to learn about the etiquette of conducting family visits. During the trip, they visited local families and the community nearby and gained a deeper understanding of the life and challenges in rural areas in China. After the 7-day trip, our volunteers and the local students were able to develop friendships and they all had a great time in Huangshan.
