HKUST Global Days of Changemaking 2020

Sub-heading

Mapathon

Mapathon @HKUST

Everyone can be a Changemaker! You do not need to be an expert to make a change or to support the humanitarian works through Mapathon!

What is Mapathon?

Disasters around the world kill nearly 100,000 and affect or displace 200 million people every year. Many of the places where these disasters occur are literally 'missing' from any map and the first responders lack the information to make valuable decisions regarding relief efforts.

In view of this, collaborating with the Missing Maps, HKUST Connect is organizing Mapathon, an amazing opportunity for volunteers to digitally connect and map the most vulnerable places in the developing world so that locals and international non-governmental organizations can use these maps and data to better respond to crisis affecting these areas.

Participation is not bound to a specific room nor location. With computers and internet connection, volunteers will be comparing satellite images and adding buildings and roads to a shared online map which will then be made available for all humanitarian organizations worldwide.

With your help we can directly improve the lives of some of the planet’s most vulnerable people.

What do I need?

Just a laptop/desktop, a mouse, stable internet connection and enthusiasm!
*A mouse isn't absolutely necessary but it makes the mapping a lot faster.

What is the Missing Maps & how does Mapathon work?

How does Mapathon work?

Step 1. Remote volunteers trace satellite imagery into OpenStreetMap
Step 2.
Community volunteers add local detail such as neighborhoods, street names, and evacuation centers
Step 3. Humanitarian organizations use mapped information to plan risk reduction and disaster response activities that save lives
