Local commitment is among the core values of the University. HKUST staff members are encouraged and commended to dedicate themselves to serving the local community. This not only benefits the community but also contributes to their personal development and fulfilment. In line with this spirit, the University has provisions for staff to apply for Special Leave to participate in volunteering service.

Special Leave for Participating in Volunteering Service

In each calendar year, staff members can be granted up to four working days of Special Leave with full pay for participating in volunteering service. This leave can be taken on a full-day or half-day basis. Please refer to the HRO website for guidelines.

To apply for Special Leave, staff members should use the online Staff Leave Application System. It is important to discuss with their supervisors beforehand and ensure the activities do not affect their normal teaching, research or administrative duties.

Never underestimate the difference you can make by offering your time and effort to serve others. As you extend grace and show compassion, you are giving a part of your life to make someone else's a little better. By showing up, you are spreading hope.
