[This is a talk in Changemaker Gear Up Training Series (GUTS)]

With media coverage and education, more minority groups are gaining exposure in recent years. However, what happens when multiple identities collide? Have you heard of any stories about ethnic minority queers?

Co-organized by HKUST Connect and Gay Games Hong Kong (GGHK), this talk will focus on the minorities within minorities in Hong Kong. Three college students, Alexandra Anselmo Sotto (he/she), Moira Daphne Gonzales Toledo (they/she) and Debin Limbu (he/him), who just attended Hong Kong's first-ever queer graduation ceremony, will share their experiences and challenges along the pride journey. Being members of the ethnic minorities and the LGBT+ community at the same time, they also face conflicts between religion, traditional values and queer identity. Sign up to listen to their stories!

Speakers:

Alexandra Anselmo Sotto (he/she)

Moira Daphne Gonzales Toledo (they/she)

Debin Limbu (he/him)

College students

Three speakers are being gender and sexual minorities within ethnic minorities. Alexandra Anselmo Sotto (he/she) and Moira Daphne Gonzales Toledo (they/she) are both Filipinos who arrived in Hong Kong five and eight years ago. Moira used to struggle with gender dysphoria and felt frustrated within the Catholic community. Debin Limbu (he/him) is a Nepalese who grew up in Hong Kong. After Limbu came out as gay, his mother refused to accept by arranging marriage for him, hoping to maintain her own reputation. Talking about sex and gender openly is a sensitive subject in ethnic minority groups. It is either avoided being talked about or never brought up in the household. Due to this, Alexandra advocates for a safe space in schools to receive education regarding sex and queer identities. As college students, they are hoping to build an inclusive campus based on their uneasy experiences at school.
